Daniel Cormier has warned Jon Jones not to underestimate Stipe Miocic following a leaked private conversation involving a fan and the current heavyweight champion on X.
Daniel Cormier Issues Warning to Former Foe Jon Jones
Expecting to go head-to-head with Miocic in November, a fan shared their private messages with Jones on X. One reply reading, “I’m about to beat up this old man,” prompted Cormier to respond on his YouTube channel.
In his video, the former two-division UFC champion discussed how much of a threat Miocic still is at 41 years old, as well as Jones’ reasoning for choosing to fight the two-time heavyweight champion over the current interim champion, Tom Aspinall.
Cormier said: “He said Stipe is old. Sounds like Jon Jones is wanting to fight the highest-grossing fight with the least amount of risk. But I will warn you this: Don’t overlook Stipe Miocic.
He is a f*cking killer, and if you overlook him, he will put you out. He’s just that good. 42, 35, 31, 38 (years old), don’t matter. Miocic is going to show up. It’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
Why Jones Is Opting For The Heavyweight GOAT Over The Current Number One Contender
The Ohio-born heavyweight has not fought since his knockout loss to Francis Ngannou back in March 2021. However, DC defended Jones, suggesting that if the money makes sense, so does the fight.
He said: “If he’s making $15 million, he should be fighting Stipe Miocic. It’s almost like asking someone to win the lottery but say, ‘I don’t want the ticket.’ Of course he’s going to fight him if he’s making $15 million.
If I’m Jones, I’m definitely fighting Stipe for $15 million. I’m telling you, I didn’t get that. I didn’t get $15 million to fight Stipe. I’m telling you. I fought him three times.”
Since their scheduled bout for November 11th 2023 at UFC 295 got cancelled, due to Jones tearing his pectoral tendon, ‘Bones’ has been heavily criticised for not entertaining the possibility of facing Aspinall, following the Brit’s rise in the division.
Although in the leaked messages Jones mentioned “riding off into the sunset”, the number one contender, along with many fans, will hope to get his shot at legitimate gold next.
