It is a well-known fact that Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov do not like each other. However, will we ever see these two bury the hatchet? The answer is probably not.
These two fighters have met inside the octagon at UFC 229. These two have had the most intense rivalry in the UFC since the company began. Since their history-making encounter, it is still the only PPV to have over 2 million buys in the UFC. Conor McGregor still often takes digs at Khabib Nurmagomedov on social media and interviews despite losing the fight between the pair.
Recently, Conor McGregor has gone off on both Khabib Nurmagomedov as well as the former U.S. president Donald Trump. This is due to the former president calling Khabib Nurmagomedov his favourite fighter of all time.
Donald Trump did, however, get off relatively lightly with Conor McGregor calling his remarks a “campaign-ending decision”. It was Khabib Nurmagomedov who took the brunt of the backlash as McGregor would go on to label him a “smelly fat mountain monkey from the inbred mountains of Dagestan.”
Could Conor McGregor Find Peace by Fighting Khabib’s Protégé Islam Makhachev
Former UFC champion Daniel Cormier, who is close friends with Khabib Nurmahomedov has offered his take on the constant bickering between the two former champions. Cormier also discussed the possibility of ever seeing them squashing their beef. Daniel Cormier told Ben Askren during an episode of Funky & The Hunk podcast;
“He just hates Khabib. He hates him… They are not letting it go,”
“It’s deep-rooted, but it’s deep-rooted on both sides, honestly… [Khabib] doesn’t like this guy, bro. They don’t like each other. This is crazy. It really is. It’s deep. It’s very deep, but I think the closest thing you would get to a resolution in that is, again, Conor beating [Michael Chandler] and then earning a championship fight against Islam Makhachev, right?
“Then Khabib could probably try to find some comfort in that and Conor could try to actually find redemption in trying to beat the guy that became the guy, right? So, there’s stories there. I don’t know that it happens because Michael Chandler can’t seem to get a date”
The idea of Conor McGregor ever challenging the current lightweight champion seems very far-fetched at this current stage. This is due to Conor McGregor currently on a 2 fight-losing streak and not fighting since 2021. However, taking in McGregor’s drawing power and the history between McGregor and Nurmagomedov, we could still see Dana White make this fight official. This would be to try and break the UFC 229’s record of the most-viewed event in the promotion’s history. This is of course all relaying that Conor McGregor can get past Michael Chandler if these two ever fight.
