UFC legend & long-time rival of Jon Jones. Daniel Cormier needs no introduction to most MMA fans. For those who may be new to the sport, or for fans who somehow have no inkling of who he is. DC is a former UFC light-heavyweight champion & he now often commentates on a vast number of fights in the promotion.
Cormier was joined by Jon Anik & Joe Rogan at the desk for UFC 285. This led many to speculate on what DC might think when Jonny ‘Bones’ Jones takes on Ciryl Gane for the UFC heavyweight title.
Jones went on to defeat Gane via guillotine in the very first round of the bout. Despite a quick finish, Cormier still had some negatives to add to his performance.
Daniel Cormier Weighs-in on Jon Jones
In a Youtube video on Cormier’s channel, DC was quick to praise Jones on his heavyweight debut. He then provided some criticism aimed at the performance;
“Jones doesn’t look like the same guy in the Octagon. Tad bit slower, his movements aren’t as quick and dynamic, but that’s what you expect from a guy that puts on that much weight, but when he went out there, he seemed to be having a good time.”
Many fans were under the impression that should Jones win, it cements his position as the greatest of all time. And for a lot of the MMA community, this is now the case.
Pre-Goat noises, Jones used his post-fight interview to issue a call-out to a fellow veteran, Stipe Miocic. Dana White went on to confirm that Miocic would be next in line to challenge ‘Bones’ for the strap. DC went on to give his opinion on the matchup. Stating that Stipe will be a much bigger challenge for Jones.
“Nobody has done to Ciryl Gane what we saw done to him tonight, but I would imagine that in Jones’ return, he will have a much steeper challenge as he will be challenged by Stipe Miocic at International Fight Week for the heavyweight championship of the world.”
Miocic had his last outing in March 2021, where he suffered a colossus defeat to now-free agent, Francis Ngannou. There is no doubt that Stipe has the talent & the capabilities to cause problems for Jones, although it will take a huge effort to dethrone him now.
What did you think of Jon Jones’s performance in Vegas? How will he fare against Stipe Miocic?
