Daniel Hughesy is “grateful” and “excited” to be competing for the Almighty Fighting Championship amateur featherweight strap at AFC 23.
Almighty FC returns to Deeside in Wales on Saturday, 4th November, and those attending can anticipate a jam-packed night of action. Tickets can still be bought by visiting the promotion’s website, as well as the event’s pay-per-view.
Ahead of fight night, we had the chance to talk with one-half of the featherweight title fight, Daniel Hughesy. Hear what he had to say below.
Interview With Daniel Hughesy
You’re a few weeks out from making the walk, and it’s a very meaningful fight. You will be competing for the AFC amateur title. Just highlight what that means to you and how excited you are to get this opportunity.
I’m extremely grateful and excited to be competing for featherweight gold on November 4th! I work so hard for this, and it feels great to receive the opportunity to prove how great I can be.
2023 has been a good year for you, going 2-1. It’s been an active year. That said, are you totally satisfied with the year of competition you’ve had? How would you sum it up?
I’m very satisfied with my level of activity this year. Three fights went against top prospects from unreal gyms such as Aspire, Manchester Top Team and the Forge Fight Academy! It was unreal calibre for me to test my metal, although I’ve had three fights. I have also made weight for FCC, but unfortunately, my opponent ran for the hills, so after this, I have been sort of 5 fight camps! And if my coach gets his way, I’ll be fighting in December as well.
Daniel Hughesy on Competing Alongside Team Mate
You put a post up regarding you and your teammate Cameron Griffith making the walk at Almighty FC. How has the build-up felt knowing you’re going to war with one of your friends?
It always feels good going to war with your brothers by your side, and it’s an honour to have Cameron fighting by my side! I’ve been a part of Cam’s mma journey since he was 11, and I have had the pleasure of watching him evolve and become an absolute killer with an amazing work ethic!
This is your second fight under the Almighty banner. Last time out, you successfully defeated Siyamek Mehdikkah. In your own mind, what does Daniel Hughesy need to do in order for the result to be the same as last time out?
This is my second fight in almighty, but the fighter is totally different! Siyamek was easily my hardest fight, with unbelievable confidence and wrestling pedigree! In regards to what I need to do? Stay composed and do what I know I can. Wherever the fight takes me, I’m going to try and thrive !!
Damien McKenna is the man standing across the Octagon from you on fight night. He’s attained two amateur titles, hunting his third. What do you make of him, his skills, and the style he’s going to bring on fight night?
I feel like Damien is going to bring ferocious striking to me, and I’m excited about it. I tell everyone I’d prefer for my opponents to be as impressive as Damien because my aim is to develop, so to do this, I need to fight the best in order to be the best!
Amateur Title
In terms of amateur titles, many fighters look at it differently. For some, it’s a great accomplishment. For others, it means nothing. What would it mean to you to get your hand raised?
I do dream about titles, and I won’t lie to you, but specifically, because I see them as milestones across my journey, getting these titles and fighting the best improves me no matter the result and ultimately leads to me turning pro and chasing my dream! Getting my hand raised is important to me because I get to relish in victory with the people who made me what I am! The people like Nathan Lambert, Coach Martin, Aaron Aby, and Gaz Stalman! Amy’s Pain and so many more.
Finally, for those who haven’t witnessed you fight, let them know what you’re doing to do to Damien McKenna?
Unfortunately, I’m not the trash-talking type. I guarantee I’m going to do everything I can in order to get the W, but I hold big respect to Damien and his team! But for those who haven’t seen me fight, there’s a reason my nickname is the “Northern nightmare “. Keep your eyes peeled.
