Veteran Danny “Swift” Garcia has called out controversial fighter Conor Benn for a fight in the 154 pound division.
Rumors are circling that the American veteran Danny Garcia (37-3) is in advanced talks to fight Britain’s Conor Benn (23-0). Garcia told YSM Sports Media that “I would love to fight him at 154” also adding that he would love to fight him on “UK Soil”. The 35-year-old who has not fought since beating Jose Benavidez Jr in 2022 is confident he can beat the hungry Brit.
Conor Benn
Since his last outing against Peter Dobson (16-1) Conor Benn has been on the receiving side of call outs by some of the biggest names in boxing. Including multi-weight champion and knockout artist Gervonta “Tank” Davis or as he is now to be known Abdul Wahid. With Matchroom’s owner Eddie Hearn confirming via X that a contract has being sent to “Tank”. Although any hopes that fans might have raised, were quickly dashed on Monday after Hearn revealed the contract had been declined by the pound for pound star.
Conor Benn who is still at the centre of unresolved doping allegations has fought his last two fights in America. Recently beating the undefeated Peter Dobson by unanimous decision in his first headline bout in Las Vegas. Previous to this he fought the experienced Mexican Rodolfo Oroczo who also went the distance, although Oroczo failed a drug test following this fight.
The Destroyer has been linked to some of the biggest names in the sport of late, including a mega fight with the legend Manny Pacquiao. Conor is still in the midst of a highly controversial dispute with the British Board of Boxing Control, following his two failed drug tests for the performance enhancing drug Clomiphene, prior to fighting Chris Eubank Jr. Whilst the WBC has cleared The Destroyer to fight again following the production of 270 page document. Conor can still not fight on home turf under the BBBofC. Although with a hearing due to take place soon, we could soon be seeing Benn back in a British ring.
Danny Garcia
Danny “Swift” Garcia who has an impressive 64 wins from 75 bouts, including 25 wins by way out of knockout. As mentioned previously the 35 year old American has not fought since 2022. Citing in his post fight interview that he has been suffering with poor mental health. “Swift” appears to to be eager to put this behind him and have one more run in the sport. Garcia will be most known by the British fans for his stunning knockout of now retired fighter Amir Khan in 2012 for the Unified Super-Lightweight Championship.
Garcia has had some notable wins over his long career. Including Zab Judah, Erik Morales, beating Robert Guerrero by unanimous decision for the WBC Welterweight title. The two-weight world champion has seen success in three different divisions. With his most recent fight taking place at 154 pounds. Conor who has fought at 147 for most of his career, would certainly be facing his toughest opponent to date.
The Outcome?
With the potential that Conor could soon be cleared to box again on these shores, Danny Garcia could be the big name that Benn is lacking. Although Benn has not made the Welterweight limit since 2022. It would appear to be in Benn’s favour to bring Garcia down to the 147 limit, which could prevent the fight taking place. If it does take place it will certainly be an intriguing watch for fans. Benn, love him or hate him. Is one of the biggest stars in the sport and although Garcia has been inactive, he is a reputable scalp for The Destroyer.
Conor will certainly need to find the power that critics have alleged has been missing in his recent fights. If not, he can expect Garcia to walk him down using his experience to hand Conor his first defeat. The fight has all the ingredients to be a blockbuster. With both fighters not scared to share hooks a knockout could be likely for either opponent. Danny Garcia would certainly be welcomed on these shores and would provide a big name fight for Benn’s homecoming fight.
