UFC middleweight Darren Till assesses Jon Jones‘ fight against Cyril Gane at UFC 285 in March.
It’s been over three years since last seeing Jon Jones fight. Now he returns against Cyril Gane at 265lbs for the UFC heavyweight title in March at UFC 285. Jones has been eyeing a move to heavyweight since 2013 but now has finally made a move ten years later. The now vacant heavyweight title is on the line with Gane standing in his way, arguably one of the more difficult tests for Jones as we have no idea how Jones will perform at his newfound weight.
Darren Till Weighs in
Practically half the sport has given their opinion in this match-up, whether that’s to do with the politics behind Francis Ngannou vacating or how Jones will look at heavyweight. All topics that offer much discussion, but Liverpool’s own, Darren ‘The Gorilla’ Till, often gives his opinion and here is his take on this match-up.
“What a fight! Wow! It’s interesting because Francis Ngannou took Gane down and Jones is the best wrestler in the heavyweight division and that speaks volumes for me. Jones is not a stupid fighter who’ll go striking with Gane, he’ll mix it up. Jones has been out for a hell of a long time but I still think he’ll prove too strong. But it will be great viewing.”

Last January, Gane fought for the title against Ngannou but ended up failing. In his defence, nobody expected Ngannou to shoot a power double on Gane, exposing Gane’s takedown defence to be a hole in his game which is something Jones is more than capable of capitalising on. Of course, Jones’ being a former light-heavyweight, he’s more than likely to of trained with heavyweights, but as any fighter will tell you, sparring is different to fighting. Will Jones’ chin hold up at 35? Can Gane stop the takedowns? How will Jones deal with someone who is naturally bigger? Both men may be the same height and weight, but Gane has naturally been 240lbs his whole adult life, unlike Jones.
It’ll be interesting to see how Gane performs against the GOAT but also how will Jones look at heavyweight. Find out on March 4th!
