Fans of UK MMA should be very excited, as the return of Davey Grant is this weekend. He’ll be taking on Louis Smolka in a bantamweight fight. A very exciting and intriguing match-up, this could be a contender for fight of the night. Both men possess many weapons, so be expecting a full display of Mixed Martial Arts.
”Dangerous” Davey Grant
Nicknamed dangerous for a reason, Grant is just that. With 11 finishes in his 13 wins, Davey has both knockouts and submissions in his repertoire. Three KO/TKO’s and eight submissions have Davey as one of the most exciting fighters to watch in a division full of special talents. Formerly known for his impressive ground game, “Dangerous” has been sleeping people with his hands recently. His last two victories came by way of knockouts from his left hand.
With an overall record of 13-6, all of his losses have come to high-level UFC competition. In his last two outings, Davey lost decisions. In a very fun fight, the first to now #5, Marlon Vera, saw both men go to war. Then most recently, Adrian Yanez, one of the most highly touted prospects in the division. Davey showed why he’s at such a high level despite the defeats and will be willing to show this once again when he faces Smolka.
Grant has put them in the rearview mirror with injuries in the past. Now more active than ever, the 36-year-old fighting out of Bishop Auckland will be looking to regain momentum and make a push at the top 15 and beyond.
Louis “Da Last Samurai” Smolka
A regular in the UFC bantamweight division, Smolka made his company debut back in 2014. With a brief stint away, Louis has fought 16 times in the UFC octagon, taking on a who’s who of tough competition. With a professional record of 17-8, Louis will be the more seasoned of the two, despite being six years junior. Also a finisher, Smolka is a kill or be killed kind of fighter, seeing the judges only six times in his career.
An impressive eight KO/TKO’s and seven submissions to his resume. “Da Last Samurai” has shown he is a fighter to watch, proving he has all the skills and can win fights wherever they end up. 2-3 in his last five fights, Louis’ back is slightly up against the wall, but he’ll be looking to pull out all the stops and take Davey Grant into deep waters and gain the win.
Looking to get back to winning ways and deliver on his career’s early promise. At only 30, Smolka has plenty of time to crack the top 15. With a win against Davey, he will catapult himself into a great position for his next fight.
The Fight
Expect fireworks with two complete Mixed Martial Artists and 26 finishes between them. Both are well versed in all facets of the game. This could be a stand-up war or a grappler showdown.
Taking place on the main card of UFC Fight Night: Błachowicz vs Rakić, many eyes will be watching. Looking to capitalise on the opportunity and set themselves up for big things, both men will be giving it their all. Available to watch in the UK on BT sports, Davey will make his walk to the cage around 2:30 am. If that’s too late for you, you can watch the fight via the BT Sport the next day.
