Deontay Wilder has told reporters he won’t be tuning in to the Tyson Fury vs. Francis Ngannou fight in October.
The WBC Heavyweight title holder is scheduled to face ex-UFC Heavyweight champion Ngannou in two months’ time. This will be the second boxing-MMA crossover event between superstars from both worlds, following on from 2017’s ‘Money Fight‘ between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Conor McGregor.
According to Queensbury Promotions owner Frank Warren, the matchup is not an exhibition fight, although the WBC belt is not expected to be on the line. Many boxing fans worldwide are frustrated with the matchmaking, having wanted to see Fury take on Oleksandr Usyk in an undisputed Heavyweight title fight.
Wilder will be more than familiar with Fury’s ring skillset. The pair are long-standing rivals, with ‘The Gypsy King‘ getting the better of the American on two occasions from three.
The first fight of the duo’s epic trilogy will long live in the memory of boxing audiences due to Fury’s movie-like rise from the canvas. Their final stand-off also produced an incredible contest, which saw both fighters earn several knockdowns before the stoppage.
Deontay Wilder on Fury vs. Ngannou
Wilder seemingly shares a similar viewpoint to many avid boxing enthusiasts. The distaste for his nemesis appears to have ran no weaker, and reporters were keen to get the American’s thoughts.
When asked if he’ll be watching Fury vs. Ngannou, Wilder told ESNEWS: “Probably not.
“I think it’s gonna be boring, in my gut I feel it’s gonna be boring. I don’t think it’s gonna be an exciting fight.
“Because I haven’t been in it, the heavyweight division is going down tremendously. The excitement about it is just not the same no more … The heavyweight division has been f***ing dead.”
He continued: “I remember the time when it was like, ‘Damn, it’s good to be a heavyweight, the division is back.’
“Now you don’t feel no electricity at all. And we know what man brought that excitement.”
