Dominick Reyes had a life threatening injury that forced him to pull out of his upcoming bout.
The former two time light heavyweight title challenger reveals had a major blood clots injury. This forced him to pull out of his rescheduled bout against the up and coming, City Kickboxing fighter, Carlos Ulberg. This fight was previously scheduled to be happening at UFC 297 in January. However, due to an undisclosed injury for Ulberg, the UFC rescheduled this bout for the Atlantic City card on March 30th.
Dominick Reyes is currently on a four fight losing streak after being on 12 fight win streak. His last win came over a main event spot against Chris Wideman when he moved up to Light heavyweight. Reyes did quick work with getting a first round knockout of the former middleweight champion. This earned Reyes the title shot versus the light heavyweight king back then, Jon “Bones” Jones. In what was a close fight, he ultimately lost the fight to a split decision. With Jones afterward leaving the division, this set up Reyes for another title shot, this time against Jan Blachowicz. His loss to Blachowicz started a streak of knockout losses. Two more losses came off the hands of Jiri Prochazka and Ryan Spann.
This fight versus Ulberg was going to be his bounce back fight.
Dominick Reyes Reveals the Injury
During an interview with MiddleEasy, Dominick Reyes reveals what happened to make him pull out of the fight.
“God puts us through some trials, and I’m having another hard go right now,” Dominick Reyes told James Lynch. “Me and Carlos were slated to fight on January 20th. He pulled out, I don’t know why. It’s an injury, obviously, but he’s not going to say what his injury is. And then a week later, I ended up getting blood clots. Deep vein thrombosis. So yeah. I’m out for a minute.”
“I’m lucky to be alive right now, that’s always nice,” Dominick Reyes explained. “We caught it early so it didn’t become a pulmonary embolism, and thank God for that. Which is kind of crazy because I got a massage. My leg was hurting, and I thought I pulled a muscle in my calf, so I got a massage, and that’s the worst thing you can ever do. I’m lucky I didn’t die on that massage table right there.”
