In the main event of ONE Fight Night 9 on Prime Video on Friday, April 21, it only took Jonathan Haggerty two minutes and 40 seconds to put on the best performance of his career.
UK’s favourite scored a stunning upset victory over Thai superstar Nong-O, capturing the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Title in the process.
To make matters sweeter, “The General” was able to do it all at the iconic Lumpinee Boxing Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand.
Here’s what went down at the iconic stadium before Jonathan “The General” Haggerty dethroned Thai legend Nong-O for the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Championship in the main event.
Jonathan Haggerty Puts on a Clinic
Haggerty and his foe went at it from the opening bell, both men happy to trade heavy blows. It was the Brit’s thunderous punching combinations, however, that led to one of the biggest upsets ever seen in the historic venue.
With his blazing-fast boxing, Haggerty put the titleholder on the canvas not once, not twice, but three times in the first round to capture 26 pounds of gold and secure his place in the history books.
As a result, the 26-year-old not only became the ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion, but he also improved his record to 20-4.
What’s more, after the fight, ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong awarded the newly crowned champion a US$100,000 performance bonus for the emphatic victory.
What’s Next?
It’s likely Haggerty will face Felipe “Demolition Man” Lobo, who secured the biggest win of his career in a come-from-behind knockout victory over #1-ranked bantamweight Muay Thai star Saemapetch Fairtex in an unforgettable war at ONE Fight Night 9.
The Brazilian struggled early, suffering a knockdown in the second frame thanks to a thunderous left hook from Saemapetch. In the final frame, though, “Demolition Man” snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
Lobo’s massive right punch put Saemapetch on wobbly legs.
Then, he followed with a flurry of ferocious strikes to bring an end to the electrifying encounter at 1:56 of round three.
The 30-year-old improved his striking record to 22-8 and, to make matters sweeter, earned a US$50,000 performance bonus from ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong.
