UFC Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis may be moving up to 205lbs to face Light-Heavyweight champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira
South African Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis earned his first title defence on Saturday at UFC 305. He faced longtime rival and former Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.
Du Plessis showed grit and determination fighting through some heavy offence from Adesanya. Dricus would get the fight to the ground in the fourth round and submitting Israel by Rear-Naked Choke.
The fight, fuelled by their African heritage, ultimately put their beef to bed with both settling their differences after the fight. Although previously very hateful towards Du Plessis, Izzy went on to admit he is now a fan of Dricus.
Despite his close-fought fight with Sean Strickland, it seems Dricus wants to look for fresh opposition elsewhere. The UFC confirmed that Strickland would be next in line for a Middleweight title shot.
But DDP’s coach Morne Visser has other plans.
Dricus du Plessis’s Coach Calls for Alex Pereira Super fight in December
After getting his hand raised Alex Pereira weighed in on the fight. Formerly the Middleweight champion and now the Light-Heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira wants to fight Dricus.
In a post on Instagram Pereira stated he was going down to 185lbs to fight Dricus. But Dricus’s coach Morne Visser sees that as Pereira making excuses for himself in the case of a loss.
He told Submission Radio:
“No, I won’t give him the joy to go down to 185 (pounds). We’ll just go up because we don’t want to beat him and he’ll say that ‘We had to go down’ and he was fatigued and whatever…
I’m sure that the UFC will be OK with that… I’m not going to wait for him to come down. He’s fighting in October, so I really hope the UFC gives us the blessing for this for December – as soon as that.”
A fight between Dricus Du Plessis and Alex Pereira seems guaranteed to go down in the future. But with Pereira fighting in October, a December date may be too soon of a turnaround for Alex.
December or not this fight is bound to be a blockbuster.
