UFC Lightweight star Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier took to X to push the promotion to bring a fight night to his hometown
Often the overlooked challenger Dustin Poirier finally seems to get the respect he deserves for his years of handiwork. Forever the underdog, undeniably a legend, Dustin has gone through the toughest names in the UFC’s history since his debut against Josh Grispi in 2011.
Dustin stepped in on short notice to replace then UFC Featherweight champion and legend Jose Aldo at UFC 125. Ultimately living up to the task of defeating Grispi by decision and the rest is history.
30 fights, 21 wins, 10 KO’s and 5 submissions later, “The Diamond” is a franchise favourite and a destined Hall of Famer. Whilst never claiming undisputed UFC gold his countless Fight of The Night’s and notably his knockout of Conor McGregor shot him to the forefront of the company’s biggest stars.
After a long and plentifully damaging tenure in the UFC, his last loss left fans unsure about his future. Now 35 years old, Lafayette, Louisiana’s own Dustin acknowledged the toll the sport has taken on his body after his most recent about.
At UFC 302 Dustin Poirier faced Lightweight champion Islam Makachev in June, subsequently losing by Submission in the 5th round. What was seen as a last dance to many including Poirier the loss seemed to many as the end of “The Diamond’s” career.
In the octagon interview following the loss he stated:
“If I do fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times. I’ve got a little girl, I’m 35 years old, this might be it. I think this might be it.”
This came as a disappointment to the MMA masses. Since then he has hinted at a return on X.
Posting “Uno mas,” translated from Spanish to English as “One more.” The itchy knuckled Dustin seems hungry to go out on a win.
His latest posts on X seem to hint he has a desire to return to the octagon in his hometown of Louisiana.
Dustin Poirier Campaigns for UFC Main Event in Louisiana
In a self-aware confession “The Diamond” has expressed he doesn’t believe he has another title run in him. Having to climb back up the rankings with the amount of damage he’s taken over the years is not in his plans.
However, he has shown mounting interest in a return outlining a list of potential opponents. Amongst the list are names such as; Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Charles Oliveira (and) Colby Covington.
All the matchups listed would excite fans and certainly get the seal of approval from the UFC matchmakers. But the opponent is not the only thing sparking the interest of Poirier.
In what would be a righteous send-off Dustin wants to end his career in his hometown of Louisiana. He took to X to preach his case to the UFC.
He posted: “Hey @UFC let’s bring it to the Cajundome !!.”
Followed by: “Bring the UFC to the Cajuns.”
Dustin holds an astonishing statistic of never losing two fights in a row throughout his career. Maintaining this record by one final win, in a retirement fight, in his hometown would be welcomed by all.
