Ahead of his UFC 302 title bout against Islam Makhachev, Dustin Poirier has made his prediction. Going down next Saturday, June 2nd. We are just over a week away. In a fight that has captivated fans, many wonder if this is Poirier’s last shot at gold.
Since winning the belt after defeating Charles Oliveira at UFC 280. Makhachev has defended his belt twice against Alexander Volkanovski. He also looks to extend his 12-fight winning run to 13, which will be the biggest in the division’s history.
With the odds stacked against Poirier, it feels his time is now or never. The Louisiana native enters the bout fresh off his UFC 299 win over Benoit Saint-Denis. A fight that saw him lose the early grappling exchanges before securing a second-round knockout.
Dustin Poirier Gives UFC 302 Prediction
As UFC 302 approaches touching distance, Poirier has made his predictions.
The challenger, Poirier, said the following: “I’m going to knock him unconscious and the ref is going to be pulling me off of him,”
Known for his striking and knockout power. Amassing an impressive 15 KO stoppages throughout his career. There is one move Poirier has become synonymous with over the years despite never winning via this method.
The move in question is the Guillotine choke. After securing one in his title fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242. Which saw him become the man closest to defeating the undefeated Russian. The submission has become a staple of The Diamond’s arsenal.
When asked if he would attempt one in his upcoming UFC 302 fight, he touched on his coach Mike Brown’s advice.
“‘Don’t give up position’: That’s the record on repeat,” Continuing, “Don’t go for it even if you think it’s good, tight or you have a good feel for it. Don’t give up position, especially with a guy like Islam you know.”
He explains how his coach doesn’t want to risk losing rounds and falling into “dangerous” positions with Islam. However, despite his coach’s warning he ended by saying “I’ll probably jump it.”
