With the main event being up in the air ahead of tomorrow’s UFC 279 clash, Dustin Poirier is eager to step in.
The scheduled main event was supposed to see Nate Diaz take on Khamzat Chimaev in the final outing of his UFC contract in Las Vegas. The fight card was built around the pair, who drew interest from fans worldwide. But, that fight is dead in the water.
One-half of the UFC 279 main event weighed in successfully at 171lbs. The other missed weight by 7.5lbs, which was Khamzat Chimaev. Due to the significant weight advantage for Chimaev, the fight was scrapped.
Cole Shelton from BJPenn confirmed the headliner was off. From here, the work had begun to find Diaz, a new opponent.
It’s looking likely that fans will still get to see Diaz compete one last night, but the opponent is not yet official. Reports have circulated that Tony Ferguson is running in poll position to be pushed to the main event slot.
Dustin Poirier Offers His Services to Save UFC 279
Ariel Helwani reported hours ago that Dustin Poirier was eager to step in on 24-hours notice and go toe-to-toe with Diaz. A fight the former interim champion has voiced for in the past.
Poirier posted an image of himself on the scale weighing 176lbs, and then got a call from the UFC and accepted. However, once accepting, I didn’t hear back from the promotion. The Louisiana native had a pilot and private jet on standby.
A fight between the two has been brewing since their fight cancellation back in 2018. But, for now, we may have to wait a little longer.
Who would you rather Nate Diaz face? Dustin Poirier or Tony Ferguson?
