UFC 291 is just days away, with the BMF title back on the line. Two former interim champions will compete to show that they are the UFC’s baddest mother f*****. One of that main-event, Dustin Poirier, has insisted that any potential retirement, is far from his mind. In fact, he’s stated that he will continue to fight, for as long as his “want” to compete remains.
“The Diamond” has been out of action since November of last year, when he beat Michael Chandler in a, no surprise, war at MSG. The fight ended in round number three after a slick rear naked choke from the UFC’s number 2 ranked lightweight.
Months on, the 34-year-old is returning to action for a rematch of epic proportions. Headlining UFC 291 in Salt Lake City, Utah, alongside Justin Gaethje, for the symbolic BMF championship.
The first matchup between the two came all the work back in 2018. UFC Fight Night Phoenix’s main event ended in round number four after Poirier’s vicious onslaught was enough for the referee.
Poirier Shuts Down Retirement Talk
With their rematch coming up quick, Poirier’s training partner, Renato Moicano, has claimed that he believed that the Louisianan, or even Gaethje, would likely retire from mixed martial arts with a loss in the bout.
However, according to Dustin, he still has firm plans on earning a showdown with current lightweight champion, Islam Makahchev. Retirement is, not yet, on the horizon.
“I’m not really putting a lot of energy into it,” Dustin Poirier told the New York Post Sports. “Even here, on Saturday night. I’m not doing this because I have to. I’m doing this because I want to. So, as long as the ‘want’ is still there, you guys ain’t getting rid of me.”
