Dustin Poirier isn’t fazed by Islam Makhachev’s opinion on his UFC lightweight title contention – he’s focused on the goal. Fresh off a stunning knockout victory against Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299, Poirier has his sights set on the championship.
In an interview with MMA Junkie, reigning champion Makhachev expressed his desire to face Poirier next, aiming for UFC 302 on June 1. Despite Makhachev’s assertion that Poirier isn’t deserving of the shot compared to the winners of upcoming UFC 300 bouts, timing plays a crucial role. Makhachev is eager to defend his belt and sees Poirier as the logical next step.
Poirier, however, shrugs off Makhachev’s comments, standing firm on his belief that his extensive MMA career speaks for itself.
Dustin Poirier Responds to Islam Makhachev Claim
“That’s his perspective,” Poirier stated in an interview with Mackenzie Salmon from USA TODAY Sports:
“I’ve dedicated years to this sport. I’ve been here since the early days, and I’m still here, competing at the highest level. I have the capability to defeat anyone in the world, and I welcome the challenge.”
Regarding discussions with UFC officials about the potential matchup at UFC 302, Poirier remained tight-lipped. Nevertheless, he emphasized his readiness to step into the octagon and sign the bout agreement.
“That’s my priority,” Poirier affirmed:
“If I had my pick, it would be the title fight. That’s what I’m aiming for.”
Next for Championship Gold
With a UFC tenure dating back to January 2011, Poirier has etched his name in MMA history with numerous memorable performances. Despite falling short in previous undisputed title bids against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira, Poirier remains undeterred. He believes a third opportunity against the top-ranked Makhachev could yield a different outcome.
“For me, it’s the final frontier,” Poirier declared:
“I’ve achieved everything else in MMA. I’ve built businesses, headlined numerous events, and stepped into the octagon 30 times. My family’s future is secure. But capturing the title – that’s the ultimate goal, and that’s what I’m after.”
