Dustin Poirier taunted Conor McGregor after the Irishman was forced to pull out of his UFC 303 fight.
The Diamond who has beaten McGregor twice in his career, also entertained the idea of a fourth fight.
Poirier also went on to say what’s next in his career.
Dustin Poirier Taunts Conor McGregor
After being forced to pull out ahead of his long-awaited return against Michael Chandler, McGregor cited that a previous leg injury had failed to recover adequately. That injury was sustained when McGregor fought Poirier in their third encounter. Since then, the Irishman has spent a vast amount of time on the sidelines.
Speaking on the MMA Hour, Dustin Poirier said: “Dude, a pinky toe? I’ve fought with so many injuries. Like Conor said he fought with a lot of injuries, I’ve fought with a lot of injuries over the years, but a pinky toe doesn’t seem like a reason to pull out of a fight. But also, giving him his respect, I don’t know the severity of it.
“Did he damage ligaments, is it the muscle in his foot? There’s a lot of stuff going on inside of a foot, there’s a lot of small bones, so I don’t know. If it’s just a pinky toe, I think that’s not a reason to pull out of a fight.”
Poirier vs McGregor 4?
Whilst the pair have had a long-running rivalry, with McGregor beating Poirier back in 2014 as a featherweight. The duo then clashed twice in 2021 with Poirier winning both fights via TKO and doctor’s stoppage after McGregor broke his leg. Given how hostile their last fight was in terms of the trash talk the pair hurled at each other and the genuine animosity Poirier had for Connor.
The build-up was intense and comments made by McGregor threatening to kill Dustin and his family added fuel to the fire. Given this, it’s no surprise the pair could clash again. Whilst Poirier has previously shut down talks for a fourth fight with McGregor, it seems that “The Diamond” has changed his mind.
Poirier went on to say: “He crossed lines you can’t come back from,”
“I want to whip his a**. The other day I saw him say something. He’s trying to bring that out in me. He wants me to fire back. I just go about my day. But of course, I want to say something right back and try to set up a fight with him. But it is what it is.”
Poirier Speaks About His Future
After losing against the lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, Poirier spoke about what is next for his career. “The Diamond” said: “There are different feelings every day. After that fight, I thought what else can I do in this sport and how much more I need to climb, could there be another title fight?
“Why am I even fighting? I go home weeks pass by and I be like I want to do it again, my wife and daughter wants me to stop but I know I can beat these guys. My wife doesn’t want me to take any more damage and be at home with a routine. My daughter doesn’t want me away for long periods of time.
“We’ll see. I don’t know I’m so on the fence if anything big comes up that’s exciting with big risk I would probably take it. But fighting my way back to a title shot at 155 could take five/six fights. I don’t know if I’ve got that in me. I just want to be exciting.”
Given how long of a career Poirier has had, it seems that retirement could be around the corner. Having beaten some of the best fighters the sport has to offer like McGregor, Max Holloway and many more, Poirier has had an impressive reign as one of the best lightweights in the world.
