Dustin Poirier has been a fan favourite during his UFC career. A big contributing factor is his action-packed fighting style and his fun personality. He recently showed this side to him by poking fun at previous opponents, Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler, with a “Father’s Day” meme.
Dustin Poirier’s Father’s Day Meme
With Father’s Day taking place on Sunday, Poirier saw an opportunity to throw jabs at his two former opponents. He posted this meme on his Instagram story.
The meme mocks the fact that Poirier has winning records against both McGregor and Chandler and this was his way of rubbing salt into the wounds of his previous foes.
Never Shying Away From Rivalries
Poirier has fought against the who’s who of the lightweight division. He recently fought for the undisputed lightweight title against Islam Makhachev at UFC 302. Unfortunately for Poirier, he lost the fight by 5th-round submission. Poirier’s record includes some huge names in the sport, but most notably he had a very action-packed and heated rivalry with Conor McGregor.
Dustin Poirier VS Conor McGregor
Poirier and McGregor first fought each other at UFC 178 and McGregor won via 1st round KO. After this loss, Poirier continued to fight his way up the UFC rankings. He eventually claimed UFC gold after beating Max Holloway for the interim UFC lightweight title at UFC 236. While Poirier stayed active, McGregor’s UFC career was not as consistent. The pair would eventually meet again during COVID and face off at UFC 257 on Fight Island. The build-up to the fight was very respectful and friendly, with the pair having plenty of nice things to say about one another. The fight resulted in Poirier defeating Conor McGregor via 2nd round KO.
In their third and final fight things took a more sinister turn, the build-up was very heated. Poirier is not known for his trash-talking, however, he does not back down if his opponent talks badly about him. The build-up made their fight even more hyped up by the fans. The fight ended controversially, in which McGregor broke his leg after throwing a leg kick. Again, Poirier defeated Conor McGregor, this time via round 1 doctor stoppage.
Dustin Poirier VS Michael Chandler
Poirier would also have a wild fight with fellow fan favourite, Michael Chandler, at UFC 281. Chandler, like Poirier, is known for his aggressive fighting style. The pair had a back-and-forth scrap that ended in a 3rd round submission in the favour of Poirier, via rear naked choke. After the win, Poirier did not have much respect for Chandler and claimed that he is a dirty fighter and that Chandler tried to cheat during their fight.
It is safe to say that there is no love lost between Poirier and his two former opponents. With Poirier’s fighting future looking uncertain, it is unlikely that he will face off with either McGregor or Chandler again.
