Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has named three possible fights for Anthony Joshua in 2024.
AJ has had a strong last 12 months, winning three heavyweight clashes against Jermaine Franklin in April via decision, before a big KO win against Robert Helenius in August. He finished the year with a very impressive demolition of Swede Otto Wallin, in his co-headline ‘Day of Reckoning’ event in December.
The win against Wallin has lead many to believe that Joshua is at his best once again, after having a difficult couple of years in the ring, after a shock defeat to Mexican Andy Ruiz, before being beaten twice by current IBF, WBA, and IBO World Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk.
But with three wins in his last three bouts, with the last coming by destructive fashion, 2024 could be the year boxing fans see Joshua back to his best. The original plan was to see Joshua face off against long time rival Deontay Wilder in March, but those plans seemed to have cooled after ‘The Bronze Bomber’ suffered defeat to Joseph Parker on the day of reckoning card.
Eddie Hearn on Future Anthony Joshua Fights
Speaking to IFL TV, Hearn has speculated on potential future opponents for the UK heavyweight, as he looks to become a three time heavyweight champion of the world.
“Right now, we have three fights that we’re in discussions for, they’re all big, and that doesn’t involve Deontay Wilder for March. Our main aim is to fight the winner of Tyson Fury versus Oleksandr Usyk” said Hearn.
He added “Obviously there’s the Hrgovic fight out there, for the world heavyweight title, there’s a Francis Ngannou fight out there which would be colossal, there’s other heavyweights as well, the [Zhilei] Zhang fight with Queensbury.”
Hearn was also quizzed on the potential of a rematch with the man who defeated his original planned opponent, Joseph Parker.
“Parker is difficult, we beat him and unified, but that was five years ago. Joseph has earned the right for a big fight, so we don’t rule that out either. The things that ‘AJ’ wants to do is be in massive fights, win the world heavyweight title and fight Fury or get another crack at Usyk.”
Regardless of the opponent, the next 12 months is set to be possibly the biggest in the career of AJ, as he looks to regain heavyweight glory.
