Flyweight contender Erin Blanchfield has called for her shot after the hugely controversial draw in the main event last weekend. Valentina Shevchenko and Alexa Grasso went back-and-forth resulting in only the sixth draw in UFC Championship history. It was a brilliant card full of excellent performances in particular from fan favourites Raul Rosas Jr and Loopey Godinez.
Erin Blanchfield Aims at Gold
Blanchfield has been in exhilarating form since joining the UFC in September 2021, she now sits at 6-0 in the organisation on the very cusp of a title shot. Her last performance showed her determination and grit through a tough patch and she was still able to push through to a victory. Furthermore, by beating Talia Santos in August her staked her claim for the next title shot.
This is what Blanchfield said to the Schmo in reaction to the draw and rumours of a trilogy fight,
“I feel like I definitely should be next,” she followed up saying “I feel like trilogies sometimes can clog up the divisions. And I think putting some new blood in for the title will be super helpful. But you know, I mean I know Manon’s right behind me, so if anything, I can beat her up too if they do a trilogy. But I wanna be next.”
Nobly the American has mention Manon Fiorot who alike her has been scintillating since her UFC debut in 2021. Now also 6-0 in the UFC and on the verge of a title shot there are essentially two number one contenders at flyweight. Fiorot has just claimed the biggest scalp of her career against Rose Namajunas in Paris so the pair are along a similar fighting timeline. Due to the nature of the draw it seems inevitable that a trilogy happens and so it makes sense to pair the two contenders possibly on the same card to determine who is next in line for a shot at the belt.
