Wales’ Aaron Aby says he is looking for his ‘fairytale ending’ when he faces Sam Creasey for the OKTAGON flyweight championship at OKTAGON 56.
This will be his second attempt at capturing gold, with the first ending unceremoniously in November when he clashed heads with Elias Garcia.
The fight went down as a win on Garcia’s record but he has since been stripped of the title due to rejecting title defences. Aby now faces Creasey in Birmingham, a rematch three years in the making.
The Welshman’s story is well-documented, having fought through both cystic fibrosis and cancer on his way to become a mixed martial artist.
He now hopes to have his ‘fairytale ending’ on April 20.
He said: ”It would mean everything. I do feel like at times when I was going through difficult times, they were the sort of things that got me through it: having the hope of fighting again, having the hope of being a world champion.
“I feel like that would almost be that fairytale ending that I didn’t really believe existed, and still might not exist!
“I’ve just gotta appreciate it and use it and if I can do it, especially against Sam, it would be amazing and an unbelievable story.”
Aaron Aby Calls For OKTAGON Event at The Racecourse Ground
The promotion recently announced that they will be hosting their second stadium event in October when they head to Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Arena for OKTAGON 62.
Their first stadium show is set to take place this summer at Eden Stadium in Prague, hosting the ‘Rematch of the Century’ between Karlos Vemola and Attila Vegh.
Aby, who hails from Wrexham in North Wales, hopes that his home town will be the next to host one of these ever-so-rare stadium events.
He said: “I feel like Rob [McElhenney] and Ryan [Reynolds] are UFC fans, I’ve seen them at a few events, I’ve seen them in the UFC hats.
“The Racecourse does put on summer events, I know it hasn’t got a roof but I feel like Aaron Aby fighting in a football stadium is almost meant to be.”
