British amateur MMA fighter Garon Shemar has claimed his upcoming opponent at Battle Arena is one-dimensional.
Shemar takes on Ibrahim Abdul Basith at Battle Arena 77 in Coventry for the promotion’s bantamweight championship. The Lions Gym fighter is looking to bounce back from a controversial first-round submission loss to Jack Humphries, deterring his Golden Ticket Fight Promotions title aspirations for the time being.
Basith will be the third consecutive wrestler that Shemar has faced. However, he doesn’t believe he is as well-rounded as his previous two opponents.
He said: “Same old sh*t, isn’t it. ‘Oh, what’s he gonna do, he’s gonna wrestle me’. No surprise really, he’s just gonna wrestle me.
“But, I think the difference is, this is no disrespect, honestly, I’m just saying what I see – my last two opponents, Jack Atherton and Jack Humphries, I knew that their game plan was obviously going to be to take me down but they’re no slouch on the feet either. They can still throw and I’ve still gotta be real sharp, and I’ve gotta be real sharp in this fight. Of course, anything can happen, but I think this guy only has wrestling.
“That’s all he’s got, to be honest, and that’s no disrespect. If he’s really good at one thing he might come in there and maul me and you might not even need striking. But, just observing him vs my last two opponents, my last two opponents were way more well-rounded whereas this guy only has wrestling, that’s his only hope.”
The Coventry local has only got one finish on his amateur record but is predicting a second in his fight this weekend.
He continued: “I’m either gonna stop him with strikes in the second [round] or I’m gonna submit him in the first [round].”
Shemar Says It Is ‘Nice’ to Be Fighting for Another Belt
The 21-year-old won the BMF MMA amateur title in Barnsley back in April, defeating Jack Atherton via split decision. He is now looking to claim his second title in the space of six months when he challenges Basith for his title.
The Golden Ticket title is one of if not the most coveted amateur belt in the UK and despite losing out last time, he still has his eyes on that accolade.
He said: “Yeah, the belt’s always nice, isn’t it? That’s two belts in six months, it’s a nice little achievement.
“But, that Golden Ticket [title] is coming next, man, I’m telling you. But, it’s always nice to have a belt to your name.”
