UFC bantamweight Rob Font has opened up on his game plan for his UFC 287 bout against Adrian Yanez.
The 35-year-old takes on Yanez on the main card of UFC 287 in Miami, headlined by the rematch between Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya. His opponent, whose style has been likened to that of Jorge Masvidal, comes into the fight having won all five of his UFC outings so far – with four of them by knockout.
In an exclusive interview with Combat Sports UK, Font revealed his plans for the fight.
He said: “We have a game plan, he definitely has more of a boxing defence – in a general way [it would be] to kinda get him out of position so I can land something big. But, he’s slick with it, he’s making it work. He loads up fully so you can see why he’s putting guys away. But, if I get him out of position, or lean too far one way or the other then I can make something happen, that’s the game plan.
“[But] I wanna submit him, I’m thinking like second-round submission.”
Font on His Previous Two Fights
Font is coming off the back of consecutive losses to ‘Chito’ Vera and Jose Aldo, something that he is experiencing for the first time in his career. Although, he has admittedly learned a lot of lessons from the two fights and plans to take the adjustments into this fight with Yanez.
He said: “I was winning most of every single round, then I would lose right at the end with something big. That’s the hard part at this level, one little mess up and you will pay for it.
“You saw it in my last fight, I was winning most of every single round. Obviously Chito did a great job of taking advantage of the big shots but I wasn’t wearing that damage as well as I usually do. It kinda hit the trifecta of looking worse than what it actually was, him stealing each round and me putting myself in that position. If I can tighten that up then I think I can win these types of fights.”
Font on Fighting in Front of Fans Again
With the card taking place from the Miami-Dade Arena in Miami, Florida, this will be the New England Cartel fighter’s first bout in front of a crowd in over three years. The #6 ranked bantamweight spoke about fighting in front of fans again, as well as the pressure on him going into the event.
He said: “I’m definitely excited to get back out there in front of a crowd. I haven’t been in front of a crowd since D.C. in 2019 against Ricky Simon. All my fights have been at the Apex since I came back and this isn’t a main event either so there isn’t an extra two rounds.
“Regarding pressure, I guess you could say there’s a little less but it’s still there, I’d never lost two in a row and I definitely don’t plan on making it three. But, that’s with every UFC fight especially when you’re fighting a killer like Yanez.”
