UFC welterweight Trevin Giles has discussed his UFC 291 matchup with Gabriel Bonfim, claiming his boxing is going to be better than the Brazilian’s.
The pair will clash in the featured prelim bout of the pay-per-view event on July 29. The card will take place in Salt Lake City, Utah – headlined by the rematch between Dustin Poitier and Justin Gaethje.
Giles is currently on a two-fight win streak and can be spoken of as a UFC veteran at this point in his career. The 30-year-old signed with the promotion in 2017 and has since had 11 fights inside the octagon.
Bonfim, on the other hand, is undefeated through 14 professional fights and is the younger brother of UFC lightweight Ismael Bonfim.
Giles said: “The guy [Gabriel Bonfim], he likes to box but most of his wins are by submission. From what I’ve seen, he kind of overwhelms people with his striking and then he ends up getting the submission because the other guy does some kind of desperation move or something.
“I think that my hands are better than his, my boxing’s going to be better than his, I think I’m gonna hit harder than him.
“He may or may not get me down but he’s gonna pay every time and I think he won’t be able to keep me down, I just see myself winning.
“He’s undefeated and there’s a reason for it so I definitely won’t underestimate him, whatever he’s doing has been working for him but I feel like it’s a good matchup. I think the fans and everybody that’s watching will love to see it.”
Trevin Giles Says Weight Cut to 170 Pounds is Easier Than 185 Pounds
The Texan made the drop to welterweight back in 2022 following his knockout loss to Dricus Du Plessis. Since the drop, he has won two out of three fights.
The difference in weight between the two classes looks a lot on paper, however, Giles has claimed his weight cut to 170 was actually easier than his cut to 185.
He said: “I don’t know why, it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me, but I’ve honestly had an easier time making 170 than 185.
“Maybe it’s just because I’m making sure everything I need to be doing, I’m doing, I don’t know but 170 is becoming very easy for me to make.”
