UFC 291 in Salt Lake City provided a terrific card this time last year, this time was no different. Heading up the card was a long awaited rematch between two of the best lightweight fighters on earth. Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje went to war to try and secure the BMF (Baddest Mother f**ker) title. Last time out this fight ended with Dustin Poirier getting the TKO stoppage in a true slugfest.
This fight, although for the BMF Title, was a clear title eliminator for UFC gold. Both men had a shot at the title not too long ago, both resulting in losses to former champion Charles Oliveria. This was their chance to reignite their title hopes, and get that long awaited shot once again.
The opening round lived up to the hype. Exchanges flying, kicks landing, with Dustin Poirier controlling the centre of the octagon. This led to many fans having Poirier 10-9 up after the first round. Justin Gaethje would go back to his corner, refocus, then proceed to live up to his nickname. Justin Gaethje used some of the head kick magic that Leon Edwards executed against his team mate Kamaru Usman. This dropped Dustin Poirier to the floor, knocking him out cold. Another highlight was added to ‘The Highlight’s ‘ resume.
Unsurprisingly, the MMA world exploded. Clips flying immediately and viral amount of views circulated within hours. This caused for the rest of the roster to have their say on Twitter/X, including Conor McGregor.
