With many pinning this victory as the “upset of the year” fighters share their views about “Sugar” Sean O’Malley emerging victorious at UFC 292.
O’Malley’s incredible knockout over Aljamain Sterling furthered him into superstardom with some exciting matchups looming in the distance.
Sean O’Malley Bursts Onto the Scene
Sean O’Malley burst onto the scene on DWCS, and has been making his way through the Bantamweight ranks ever since. After defeating former champion Petr Yan at UFC 280, he was granted a shot at the title, with his eyes firmly set upon Aljamain Sterling. With Sterling widely regarded as the Bantamweight GOAT, and O’Malley being a megastar on the rise, this main event had a huge fight feel.
O’Malley was cool, calm, and collected all during fight week, and it showed on the night in Boston.
What Went Down:
With many expecting a grounded fight, the first round shocked many to see Sterling only attempting once takedown at the end of the round, to no avail. O’Malley implemented a perfect plan to keep Sterling at range and on the backfoot. Round two then displayed a small cage wrestling exchange where both fighters landed right hands on the exit. O’Malley then circles out and catches Sterling with a pinpoint accurate right hand, sending him to the canvas. Followed up by some heavy ground and pound, referee Marc Goddard steps in to call the fight. Sean O’Malley becomes the new UFC Bantamweight Champion.
Fighters React:
With Sean O’Malley being the new bantamweight kingpin, the sky is truly the limit for the 28-year-old. O’Malley has many options at his disposal, but he is leaning towards running it back with Marlon Vera, the only man to defeat him inside the cage.
