Former king of the super middleweight division Carl Froch believes an MMA rematch between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather could go the American’s way.
In the biggest crossover event in boxing/MMA history. Conor McGregor stepped into the ring making his boxing debut to take on the then 49-0, Floyd Mayweather on the 26th of August 2017. Since then talks of a rematch between McGregor and Mayweather under MMA rules have been discussed vehemently.
The initial bout went ‘Money’ Mayweather’s way. As the boxer predictably cruised his way to victory before securing the TKO in the tenth. Despite the outcome, McGregor still had his moments. With ‘The Notorious’ now notoriously landing more punches on the elusive Mayweather than some of his previous world-level opponents.
After the bout many would praise McGregor for his showing, claiming the bout would be a completely different outcome should Mayweather rematch him inside the cage. Although looking all the more unlikely. It hasn’t stopped fans and fighters alike from speculating on what the outcome would have been.
Boxer Carl Froch Believes a Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather MMA Rematch Wouldn’t Be a ‘Mismatch’
An elite fighter in his own right, holding an incredible 33-2 record. Carl ‘The Cobra’ Froch knows what it takes to compete at the highest level of combat sports. Fighting in 12 title fights, and winning 10 of them, Froch certainly has enough knowledge to speak on boxing.
However, when it comes to MMA, Froch believes if a rematch between Mayweather and McGregor were to take place in the cage, it is anyone’s fight. Talking on the TalkSport podcast he had the following to say.
“Once they start kicking you in the legs, getting close to you and taking you to the ground, I think you are bang in trouble. But I don’t think it’s as much of a mismatch as people think it is. Especially Tony Bellew because he’s always talking about, ‘You haven’t got a chance. No way, no chance. That’s it, fight over. Boxer in a cage? No chance!’
McGregor vs. Mayweather in MMA
“I’m like, [McGregor’s got] two arms, two legs, the geezer is smaller than me. In my own mind, I don’t think it’s such a mismatch. When Conor McGregor fought Mayweather, it was a mismatch because McGregor could only use his hands, and he’s not a boxer, Mayweather is a fantastic one, one of the best ever.”
“If you put Mayweather in a cage, does that all of a sudden become a total mismatch and Conor McGregor takes him out? I’d say no. I think Mayweather can sit behind his jab, still time him with a right hand and have a look at the feet. I’d love to see it to know for sure, but I don’t think it’s a one-sided whooping. Maybe I’m stupid.”
