The first instalment of the three day Four Nations tournament kicked off with a bang, here’s a recap of all the action put on by EMMAA.
What Went Down
The first day saw some great UK talent showcased through a series of bouts commencing at 1pm, through to 4pm. With the likes of Marc Godard and Dan Hardy in attendance, athletes were sure to make for themselves today.
Standout Performances:
Nathan Kelly– Team Irelands Nathan Kelly took on Tomas Cowell of team England in a spectacular three round bout. Kelly displayed an array of unorthodox and unpredictable striking throughout the rounds. His use of powerful body kicks left his opponent at range, and cautious to close the distance. As the rounds progressed, Kelly’s confidence grew and was seen to point at none other than Dan Hardy as the final bell went. Nathan won via unanimous decision and left his mark on the flyweight division. Tomorrow, he faces no easy feat in Befan Hall, as they battle it out for their countries in the semi- finals of the competition.
Liam Davies- Team Wales’ Liam “the python” Davies more than lived up to his nickname today, making quick work of his opponent and finishing the fight in the first round via rear naked choke. Liam impressed many with his composure and patience to cage wrestle and slowly take his opponents back, until he finds an opening for a submission. After defeating team Scotland’s Ellis Pilkington, he faces Team England tomorrow in the semi- finals.
Kane D’Arcy- Team Wales’ Kane D’Arcy displayed some excellent wrestling and grappling skills today. With some very close wrestling exchanges to begin, Kane ends up on bottom position. However, as a highly experienced grappler, Kane welcomes his opponent into side control. It was here where Kane was able to trap his opponent in a buggy choke, ending the fight in the first round- a highly impressive submission for an amateur!
Lorenzo Parente – Team Scotland’s Lorenzo Parente took on Jay Aspinwall today, fighting it out for semi- final qualifications. This fight was very back and forth with some great striking and wrestling scrambles displayed. Lorenzo used some dominant wrestling skills to keep Aspinwall pinned, maintaining pressure until he transitioned to a slick armbar, finishing the fight in the second round. Parente advances to the semi- finals where he faces Kane D’Arcy tomorrow for a spot in the finals of the tournament.
That wraps up day one of the Four Nations tournament , stay tuned for updates as the tournament progresses!
