Francis Ngannou, one of the most feared heavyweight fighters in MMA, has recently shared his thoughts on the upcoming UFC 309 clash between Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic. While many fans and analysts are confident that Jones will walk away with another win, Ngannou is not so sure and believes Miocic could pull off an upset.
The fight is highly anticipated, with Miocic looking to reclaim the UFC heavyweight title. If successful, he would become a three-time world champion, a feat that would solidify his legacy as arguably the greatest heavyweight in UFC history. Despite Miocic’s legendary status, his age and recent inactivity have many predicting that Jon Jones will come out on top.
Miocic hasn’t fought since March 2021 when he lost the heavyweight belt to Ngannou at UFC 260. Since then, he’s been on the side-lines, while Jones has continued to build on his already impressive career. Many question how Miocic will perform after such a long layoff, especially given the calibre of his opponent. Jon Jones, the reigning champion, is widely considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, with his elite skills and incredible fight IQ making him a favourited in most matchups.
Despite the odds seemingly stacked against Miocic, Ngannou, who fought both men, isn’t ready to count him out just yet. In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, Ngannou gave his take on the fight, acknowledging that Miocic’s long break from the Octagon could impact his performance but also reminding fans of the former champion’s ability to rise to the occasion.
Francis Ngannou Shares Why Stipe Miocic Could Upset Jon Jones at UFC 309
“Stipe hasn’t fought for three years—since we last fought,” Ngannou said, “So, I don’t really know where he’s at, I don’t know how he’s going to show up. I know he always shows up good, but it’s been a while, and he’s not getting any younger.”
Ngannou’s point is clear: while Miocic is a fighter with a proven track record of performing in big moments, the long layoff and his age might make this a tough challenge. However, Ngannou isn’t quick to dismiss Miocic’s chances. He knows first-hand how dangerous Stipe can be and how well-prepared he is when it matters most.
For Miocic, the fight represents more than just an opportunity to win back his title. It’s a chance to further cement his status as one of the best to ever compete in the UFC. His previous victories, including two over Daniel Cormier, solidify his place among the elite, but a win over Jon Jones would add a new level to his already storied career.
That said, Jon Jones remains a formidable opponent. He has dominated nearly every opponent he’s faced, and his transition to heavyweight has only added to his mystique. Jones’ reach, fight IQ, and ability to adapt mid-fight make him one of the toughest challenges for any fighter, regardless of weight class.
Ngannou Back Miocic to Cause Upset
But Ngannou believes that Miocic could still surprise people. He referenced Miocic’s history of defying expectations, saying:
“People forget that Stipe is very good at coming into big fights with something extra. He knows how to surprise people, and I think that’s what makes him so dangerous.”
It’s true that Miocic has been in this position before, with many doubting his ability to win in certain matchups. Time and time again, he has shown his resilience and ability to strategize against the best in the sport. Whether he can do the same against someone as dynamic as Jon Jones remains to be seen, but Ngannou’s words remind us not to underestimate the former champion.
Another factor to consider is Miocic’s experience. Having faced some of the toughest heavyweights in the UFC, including two fights against Ngannou, Miocic knows what it’s like to be in high-pressure situations. He’s seen it all, and that experience could prove valuable when facing a fighter like Jones, who will be fighting just his second bout in the heavyweight division.
