Ahead of potentially securing her second title this year, we had the chance to catch up with Gemma Auld. Hear what she had to say.
Interview With Gemma Auld
Goliath Fight Series 5, you lock horns with Chloe Crozier. On paper, how do you feel you match up against one another, and where would you put her compared to the girls you’ve fought previously?
I have a lot of respect for every opponent I share the cage with, and fight experience or number of wins/ losses don’t always tell their story. But now that I’m 3-0, Chloe is a good match-up for me in terms of record. Caroline was a bit more experienced than she was, but I was only 1-0 at the time. She’s got a few fights on me and a few more rounds of experience in the cage, but I’m confident my experience competing and in training is more than enough to match that.
Two fights in two months now. You’re getting good at this, eh? Are you becoming comfortable with the whole process of preparing, enduring fight week, cutting weight, and then making the walk?
I don’t know about getting good at it, but I’m certainly improving my all-round approach to fight camp each time! I always train like I’m in a camp, so that hasn’t really changed for me. In terms of the weight cut, I don’t walk about much heavier than I fight, but I’ve definitely learned something each camp about the best way to fuel my body for training and recovery. Making the walk is still a little out of my comfort zone, but that’s why I do it. And each time, I gain a little bit more confidence!
Gemma Auld Talks BFC 4 Victory
A few weeks ago, you made the walk at BFC 4. Now, having had a couple of weeks to digest the performance. Give me your thoughts on how you feel it went.
The fight on BFC4 was probably the ideal fight for me. I needed the 3 round experience after having two first-round finishes. It was good to experience getting back to the corner in between rounds and listening to their advice. I know it went well, but as I always do, I’ve found loads of things about my performance I wasn’t happy with, which gives me loads to work on over the next few months.
You said previously you wanted to showcase more of your game other than just an armbar. What do you feel you got to show that you haven’t in your previous outings?
I got to show a bit more of my striking and work on using striking on the ground, which was something I wanted to do. I was able to show some of what I’ve been working on on the cage, too. My opponent managed to tough it out for the 10 seconds until the bell on that armbar, and I suppose the silver lining of that is that I got all that other invaluable experience.
Fight Night
She’s had an extremely busy year, going 3-2. Have you managed to watch any of her fights back? If so, how do you rate her skillset? Where do you feel you need to be cautious?
I’ve been able to watch her fight back, and I think she will be a solid opponent for me. She has won by submission and TKO and seems to be confident in all areas. Regardless of my opponents, though, I train for myself. I’ve been working on the areas of my game that I want to improve. I know I’m ready for anything she throws at me.
Finally, we’ve now seen you submit your opponents earn a decision, on Sunday
I’m not set on any one way I think the fight will go. But I know where my strengths lie, and I know I have what it takes to go 4-0 and earn my second title of the year.
