George Groves Slams Tyson Fury’s Performance Versus Francis Ngannou
Fury vs Ngannou, which was a shock announcement at the time, opened up the now famous Riyadh Season in Saudi Arabia. With fighters, pundits and boxing fans almost all in agreement that this fight would be nothing more than an exhibition. A mismatch in the favour of the ‘Gypsy King.’ In reality the fight did no go to plan, with ‘The Predator’ who has never fought under Queensbury rules before, took the champion all the way to the score cards, sending him to the canvas in the process. Fury won the fight via split decision, with many calling the result a robbery.
Fury was ringside for the ending of Riyadh season, which saw former two-time unified heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua take on Francis Ngannou. Joshua stopped the former UFC champion in two rounds with a highlight reel knockout. This only highlighted Fury’s poor performance even more. Fury received a lot of criticism for this, with people calling for his retirement. At the same time, others had slightly more understanding of the Champion’s performance. Claiming he came in overweight and that he did not take the threat of Ngannou seriously. However, Fury himself has denied this and has called for a rematch with Ngannou.
Groves who once boxed at Wembley Stadium in front of 80,000 people is no stranger to big events. He went on to state on a recent episode of his podcast. “For a lineal world champion who is apparently the best in the division, who should have lost that night but he got the decision against a no-bout cage fighter, is that the worst performance in boxing history?”
