Ahead of Saturday’s bantamweight clash in Northampton, we had the chance to catch up with George Young. Hear what he had to say below.
Interview With George Young
You are all set for your first outing of 2023, George. How are the body and mind leading into your title fight this Saturday at Battle Arena Northampton?
Im feeling really good, just wanna get in there. Just focusing on the weight this week, making sure it’s where it should be. Feeling confident and ready for a scrap.
It’s been six months since we last saw you inside the cage. How have things been in terms of training during your time off? Have you been consistently in the gym training and improving?
I’ve been in the gym pretty much the whole time I’ve been off, visited some high-level gyms in Wales and all the way in Vegas. Getting some good training in, which I’m planning on showing in my fight Saturday.
Your last fight came against Aaron Towns at Almighty FC 28. You fell short on the judge’s scorecards. What do you feel went wrong, and what measures have you taken this time to ensure you find yourself back in the win column?
I believe I’ve turned into a completely different fighter since then, physically, technically and mentally. As I said, feeling confident in my skills heading into this one and excited to put them to the test against a good opponent.
George Young on Amateur Career
You’ve been involved in some great experiences thus far in your amateur career representing your country at the IMMAF and Four Nations. How would you sum up your time so far as an amateur fighter?
I’ve been all over the place with loads of different organisations, to be honest, which I’m grateful for. Fighting against different countries and styles has given me great experience, and I’m only looking to build on it.
Saturday night, you fight for the Battle Arena bantamweight championship? What would it mean to you to attain the title in Northampton, and how much more motivation does that give you with gold on the line?
Yeah, I’m as driven as ever, mainly because I want to prove to people what I’m capable of, which I don’t think I have yet. The belt will be a nice addition and look good on the kitchen table.
Ibrahim Abdul Basith is the man standing in your way from leaving with gold. What are your thoughts on the fight itself and Ibrahim as a fellow competitor? Is there anything he does you’re impressed by?
I think it’s a good match-up. Ibrahim is a good all-rounder, and I think our styles will make for a good fight.
For those who haven’t watched you fight before, why should they tune in, and what can they expect from George Young to come to fight night?
I’m planning on putting on a top-class performance. Leave it all in there. Give my 100%.
