Interview with The Combat Co
How did the Combat Co, come to be?
Wes – Me and Colin first met at the gym (Shore MMA) some seven years ago and developed our friendship from it. Our family went to dubai on holiday back last year and that was the start of our story.
We was sat on the sun loungers having a general chit chat, discussing how much money I was spending on clothing for my son Iestyn, with him training with the kids and adults. Colin and his son Jaden was having the same problem. We realised that between us we spending best part of £5000 a year on kit. After throwing some ideas around, we contacted a friend Chris Morgan of Chris Morgan illustrations. Within an hour Chris came back to us with a logo, we changed a few things until it was what we was looking for. We wanted to use Combat in the name due to Colin serving in the RAF.
What came next?
Wes – We found some suppliers, and got some samples made with our logos on. We put the 5k we was estimating on spending over the year straight into the business. We instantly sold it all due to how popular the designs was along with the quality and value for money. Iv been around the gym for along time and sponsor alot of the fighters helping develope a good relationship witb the lads here through my other company Flame Protect UK Ltd. With Shaky (Richard Shore) being my best mate and Colin coaching the kids classes we saw an opportunity for growth. All the kids used to call him coach Col now they call him combat Col. With Shaky letting us sell a rail of stock from the gym and at local events such as Samurai Fighting Championship.
The Future
What are you looking to achieve ?
Wes – Originally it was to sell our £5000 stock, which we had to re evaluate as we managed to sell it all between the end of September and Christmas. Following this we invested more money into the brand to order a load of new stock. This includes a fully new range of designs which will be due at the end of February beginning of March. We’re already roughly two years ahead of where we had predicted to be, with us selling our first lot of stock and getting stalls at the events. Both myself and Colins kids are 13 years old, and in a few years will be leaving school and looking for a future. This will be a perfect opportunity for them to be involved in the company, with the prospect of taking over with both fully looking at having a future in MMA in whatever context possible. I also have a 19 year old daughter Megan, who has just started training at Shore MMA and she is helping us with the Combat Co alongside my wife Helen Fisher who has being doing the admin and running the shops at live events.
Is it true you already have fighters sponsored?
Wes – It is true, we have the original UFC star of Welsh MMA Jack Marshman, who has recently joined the coaching team at Shore MMA along with Carl Parker. We have sponsored some of the youth here, the likes of Bethan hall and Liam Davies. And recently we just sponsored Alex Aston.
How functional is the website at such an early stage?
Wes – No problem, Carl Parker runs a gym Blaenavon Freestyle and Grappling, and they have just put in a big order. Kitting out the full gym utilising the supply to order format to bulk buy the kit. In the month since the website has been set up, we’ve already had 1500 views. We pride ourselves on being family run business giving the personal touch to each order or enquiry.
Family Run
You stated your kids are involved, have they had much input so far?
Wes – Our kids have told us we should be using tik tok, to utilise the promoting opportunity thay have so we have our kids running our tik tok. So any time you see a post on our tik tok then that will be Iestyn and Jaden. We also took their input on kit designs, such as the Vibrant colours of pink and bright green, we was skeptical at first but the kids love it and the adults have started to follow the trend. The most important thing of all is that it gives the kids valuable experience of running a business before they even leave school and potentially take over the running of the brand.
During the interview Colin was teaching the juniors no-gi class.
