Gian Murgia is feeling extremely “confident” and “ready” ahead of his amateur MMA debut on Goliath Fight Series 3.
Goliath Fight Series 3 is set to go down this Saturday, April 29th, at the Lochgelly Centre, Lochgelly. The promoters, Steven Harris and UFC lightweight Chris Duncan, have put a Scottish heavy card together for the sold-out crowd to get stuck into.
We had the opportunity to speak with Gian Murgia before his trip into enemy territory against Lewis Hamilton on Saturday night.
Interview With Gian Murgia
You’re all set to make your MMA debut in Scotland on Saturday night. For the readers that don’t know you, talk us through a small glimpse of your background and journey into MMA.
I have always been a martial arts fanatic since I was little, I played and watched movies replying to the moves, but my family couldn’t afford the gym’s rent, so I never had a proper coach at that time.
I did pure parkour for about 8/9 years, and I had my team, my group, which I created with friends. After a while, we were contacted by gyms and events. I had a course in a gym where I was training kids who wanted to start parkour, and the money that I earned I used to pay for my first martial art, it was Muay Thai. I trained every day in parkour and Muay Thai when I got injured at some point, and I stayed out for about a year.
What are some of your earliest memories of MMA or combat sports in general?
From 2015 until covid, I was working only here in London, training in parkour only once in a while. During covid time for the second lockdown, I moved back to Sardegna, where I am from, and a mate of my cousin who’s been a pro boxer has a gym where I train every day. I had a light fight representing his team, “Shardana Boxe”.
Fabrizio Melis is my first mentor.
After the light boxing fight, I decided to return to London to study MMA properly. I trained for about 4/5 months at KO combact kickboxing, Thai and MMA, where I met Pasha, a great fighter and coach. I loved the team, but then I moved to the team underground, where I found a high level of training and people. I’ve been training since December 2022, mostly every day after work. I love my team. Each person has something that makes them special.
I found Steve. If you ask me what’s the perfect mix to create a great coach, I’ll say Steve.
Murgia on Represneintg Team Underground
You are fighting out of and proudly representing Team Underground, who are flying at the minute. Jonathan Haggerty recently claimed the ONE FC bantamweight Muay Thai world champion. What’s the team morale like in the gym since that happened, and how motivating is it for you to see someone from your own gym reach the pinnacle of his sport?
Sure, training with champions makes me feel in the right spot and very excited, but when I’m training, I’m focused on what I need to do in order to evolve my skills. I’m very excited about Jonathan. He is a golden fighter. He deserved that. I’m glad to be training in such a high-level environment, hoping that someone will speak in the future in this way about me.
You’ll meet Lewis Hamilton, who always makes his debut on the night. You recently posted on Instagram, “Opponent seems fine.” Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?
Talking about Saturday, I said that about Lewis cause I know where he’s training, and I know that he will try his best to get a good fight. I’m confident and ready. I’m from Sardegna, we’re very tough, and I really want to win my debut, but first, I’m more focused on doing a good job and getting the good experiences vibes, it’s an amateur fight, so I believe that it’s all about the experience I’m sure we will give our best so let’s see who will take over.
I’ll leave you with the last word: do you have an official fight prediction? How do you see the action unfolding?
I hope everybody will enjoy the show on Saturday.
