Gilbert Burns is among the more popular fighters on the UFC roster today. He has cemented himself with the fans by taking any fight the UFC gives him. The Brazilian has produced memorable moments inside the UFC octagon and is always in a furious fight. Now that Dustin Poirier is talking about a potential move up to welterweight, many exciting matchups are waiting for him. In addition to this, Burns has offered to fight him.
Gilbert Burns Will Fight Anyone
Burns has been in the UFC for many years. Initially, he competed in the lightweight division, where he was a solid fighter but couldn’t make the impact, he hoped for. However, that changed when he moved up to welterweight and even challenged Kamaru Usman for the title. Known for his powerful punches and slick Jiu-Jitsu, Burns is a top fighter in the welterweight division. He has a professional record of 22-6 with 15 finishes. Burns has beaten the likes of Stephen Thompson, Jorge Masvidal, and Neil Mangy. Yet, what makes him very special is that he takes fights that are very risky for him.
A prime example of this is when the 37-year-old took on Khamzat Cheimaev. He lost the fight, but his stock increased due to his performance. It is safe to say Burns hasn’t changed, as he was the first fighter to volunteer to fight Poirier. He made the offer on the social media platform X.
Poirier Will Look To Further His Legacy
Poirier has quietly been making an incredible legacy inside the UFC Octagon. He has a professional record of 29-8 with 21 finishes. Poirier has beaten the likes of Conor McGregor, Max Holloway, and Michael Chandler. Like Burns, he has good boxing and elite Jiu-Jitsu. He is a big lightweight, so he should be okay moving up a weight class. Poirier puts on great fights and isn’t afraid to turn a contest into a dogfight. A successful run at welterweight could further his legacy and put him into the conversation as one of the all-time greats. Furthermore, he has already captured the interim lightweight belt and will look to add the welterweight title to his list of accomplishments.
Why It Would Be A Good Fight And What Could It Lead Too
On paper, it would be an entertaining fight. The two competitors are both hard hitters with massive chins. Furthermore, they both have the skills to take the fight to the ground and look for submissions. A win could get either fighter back into the title conversation, as they are both big names with big fan bases behind them. When they clash, there will be a lot of eyeballs watching the fight.
It would be incredible to see these square off, reinforcing the idea that Burns will fight anybody.
