Grapplefest 11 is coming to Liverpool on the 26th February 2022. Today, we chatted with the machine Matty Holmes, who will be competing against Brad Schneider in the Under 90kgs category.
We kick things off by asking Matt who he is and what he fights for:
”Hi, my name’s Matty holmes from ”Next Generation” and I’m a black belt under Paul Rimmer. I am a father of 3 and work full time and teaches and competes In Jiu-Jitsu.”
Matt on His Training:
”Grapplefest training is going well, the hardest thing is keeping the weight up whilst improving cardio as I’m stuck between weight classes. Grapplefest and Polaris are both great shows and are unique experiences in their own rights. The UK is lucky to have professional events like these giving us UK grapplers a chance to showcase our grappling. My favourite thing about Grapplefest is having the crowd right on top of you, that makes it a fun night…
…I’ve had a look at Brad, I know what he does well. He’s good and I’m looking forward to the challenge! Right now, I’m more focused on myself and what I do well. He’s a big lad for this weight division, most of the stuff I’ve seen on him has been at around 93kg. This should be fun, I hope he enjoys making 90kg and I’m sure he will be the perfect professional as Grapplefest is the same day in weigh-ins.
Matt on Who Inspires His Jiu-Jitsu:
”There’s too many grapplers I take inspiration from but to name a few, Marcelo Garcia, Eddie cummings, Rafa Mendes and Gordon Ryan.”
We ask Matt some Quick Fire Questions!
Gi or NOGI? – NoGi
Fave move: – Heelhook
Wristlocks? – Yeah fair game!
MMA or BJJ? – I’m a fan of both equally
Tea or coffee? – Black coffee no sugar
Fish and chips or roast? – ROAST all day long
Football or Rugby? – Football for me
Flip flops or sliders? What’s the difference!? – I’m gonna say neither and go with crocz!
We ask Matt what the future holds for him and his Jiu-Jitsu:
”I don’t know what my future holds, I know what I’m capable of and like most grapplers, I’m trying to bring my everyday sparring level into the competition. I’m just interested in matches I consider a real challenge and take me onto that next challenge. I’ve got 3 kids, a full-time job to juggle with training so I’m not interested in matches that I’m expected to win, if I’m going to take time away from my family the challenge best excite me”
