Henry Cejudo has slammed fellow bantamweight contender Marlon Vera following his split decision loss to Cory Sandhagen at UFC San Antonio.
Vera and Sandhagen went the distance in their hotly anticipated bantamweight clash at the AT&T Centre in San Antonio, Texas. But, despite his four-fight winning streak, ‘Chito’ couldn’t overcome the Colorado-based fighter and lost via split decision.
The fight wasn’t without controversy however, with inexperienced judge Joel Ojeda scoring the fight 48-47 in favour of Vera, something that a lot of the MMA community heavily disagreed with. UFC welterweight Matt Brown even claimed that the judge “should be fired by morning.”
Immediately after the fight, former two-division champion Henry Cejudo took to Twitter to criticise the Ecuadorian and, in particular, his takedown defence. Sandhagen was able to take Vera down three times across the five-round contest and amass over seven minutes of control time.
Henry Cejudo on Vera’s Performance
In a tweet, Cejudo wrote: “Hey [Marlon Vera], your takedown defence is almost as bad as that p***y on the back of your head. Get to the back of the line.”
And getting to the back of the line is likely what he will have to do. With Merab Dvalishvili, Sean O’Malley, and Cory Sandhagen ahead of the 30-year-old in the 135 lb title picture – Vera will now likely need at least two impressive victories to find himself back in the spot that he was in prior to the clash in Texas.
As for Cejudo, the former Olympic gold medalist returns from a three-year retirement at UFC 288 when he faces Aljamain Sterling for the UFC bantamweight championship. Meanwhile, Sandhagen now finds himself on a two-fight winning streak and called out number-one contender Dvalishvili to a fight following his recent success over Petr Yan.
