Henry Cejudo has shared his thoughts on Dominick Cruz’s retirement
Former double champ Henry Cejudo was recently questioned at the media day for his upcoming fight with Song Yadong. While on the stage Cejudo spoke about his former rival Dominick Cruz and his decision to retire. Cejudo Had this to say about Cruz:
“That’s his decision, He may go back and be like, ‘Hey, you know what, maybe I want my last dance to be done correctly.’ I don’t think he really made those adjustments as a fighter to really understand his body more.“
“I’m going to give you guys an example: Khabib did a really good job of going through injuries and then adapted and adjusted, and how is it that he can get better? A lot of fighters have gone through that, but I don’t think Dominick ever really found it – whether it was rest, nutrition, overtraining, under training, whatever that may be.”
“He brought a lot of attention to the lower weight classes,” Cejudo said. “His fight with Urijah Faber, his fight with Cody, his fight with all the (Team) Alpha Male’s (fighters). That’s what really put the lightweight (divisions) on the map.”
“Then obviously my rivalry and his, which probably is still not even over. He probably still hates my guts as much as I hate his, but I guess the only thing I can say is I’m glad I ain’t fighting him because that would have really sucked, and congratulations to him that he just retired.”
Cejudo had faced off with Dominick Cruz back in 2020 and defeated him to defend his bantamweight belt. The two fighters have had disagreements in the past after Cruz disagreed of Cejudo’s title reign at bantamweight. When the pair met in the cage Cruz was coming off a loss and a four year layoff as well as stepping in on 3 weeks short notice.
Dominick Cruz’s retirement
Cruz’s decision to retire came after he had to pull out of his fight against rob font due to injury. This was suppose to be the athletes retirement bout but he suffered another shoulder injury. The Dominator then took to social media to announce his retirement.
Triple C’s last title run
Henry Cejudo is set to take on young up and comer Song Yadong on Saturday. This may be his last chance to make a run at the UFC belt as Triple C recently turned 38. After fighting Aljamain Sterling for the belt back in 2023 and losing a split decision, then losing to Sterling’s training partner Merab Dvalishvili last year. Turning 38 this year puts the former champ at a more senior age for a bantamweight and could be his last chance to get a title shot.
