The hitman game developer IO Interactive is cutting ties with controversial MMA star Conor McGregor. This was after a recent Irish High Court ruling concerning McGregor.
On November 22nd, a civil jury in Dublin found Conor McGregor liable for sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel room in December 2018. While no criminal charges are being brought against McGregor, the court ordered McGregor to pay $257,000 in damages. Conor McGregor, in a now-deleted tweet, stated that he is planning to appeal the decision. In light of the ruling, IO Interactive has announced it will be removing Conor McGregor from the Hitman franchise.
Io Interactive Removes Conor McGregor
On Monday, IO Interactive went and announced via Twitter that is is going to end its “collaboration” with Conor McGregor. This was following recent legal developments. The UFC fighter, who appeared as an “Elusive Target” in Hitman 3 over the summer and then returned earlier this month, is being removed from the game immediately. The company announced this when it said;
“In light of the recent court ruling regarding Conor McGregor, IO Interactive has made the decision to cease its collaboration with the athlete, effective immediately,”
“We take this matter very seriously and cannot ignore its implications. Consequently, we will begin removing all content featuring Mr. McGregor from our storefronts starting today.”
Conor McGregor has already faced numerous amount of legal issues in the past. In 2023, he was accused of assaulting a woman on a yacht, forcing her to jump into the sea to be able to escape. Although the case was eventually dropped without explanation, the woman later reported a brick being thrown through her window and an attempt to set her car on fire.
It is still relatively early to see what else is to come to Conor McGregor following this recent decision. Conor McGregor was supposed to be facing Michael Chandler earlier this year however, pulled out due to an injury. This fight would have been the first time he would have entered the UFC cage since 2021. We will wait to see if UFC cut ties with their former double champion following this decision.
