Sean O’Malley became the UFC bantamweight champion of the world at UFC 292 this past August by defeating Aljamain Sterling. He won via TKO in round two with a counter right overhand taking his record to 17-1.
O’Malley is a product of the popular pathway into the UFC, Dana White’s Contender Series which has now provided two UFC champions along with Jamahal Hill. ‘Suga’ competed in season two and knocked out Alfred Khashakyan (11-5) at 4:14 of round one.
It was during his DWCS performance that global sensation Snoop Dogg was on commentary with MMA legend Urijah Faber.
Sean O’Malley On Snoop Dogg
Sean O’Malley spoke to ‘The Breakfast Club’, where he revisited the role Snoop Dogg played during the early days of the charismatic striker’s career:
“Oh, huge. Massive, massive. It’s crazy how my career has played out. That was the beginning of the craziness. Snoop Dogg is commentating on my fight when I was 21, 22 on the Contender Series.
“It’s the first time they’ve done it. I knock that dude out, and he yells ‘O’Malley’ like 30 times. That was crazy.”
The current champion followed up with his memories of smoking with Snoop Dogg after the fight, “I don’t even remember, I got so high. We were in the trailer, and they just kept passing it. I walked out of the trailer, and there were a bunch of cameras. A bunch of people around. I hadn’t smoked, probably for three or four weeks leading up to a fight.”
The 29-year-old continued:
“I just got a crazy knockout. I just got signed to the UFC. Now I’m smoking with Snoop and when I was leaving the trailer, that felt like a movie. That was crazy. I don’t remember what we talked about at all.”
O’Malley’s first title defence will be a rematch against the only man to defeat ‘Suga’ in the UFC, Marlon Vera (23-8) at UFC 299 on March 9, 2024. ‘Chito’ finished the fight with elbows on the ground after O’Malley suffered a leg injury.
