Fighters on the upcoming UFC 273 card recently sat down to face the media’s questions: Irish welterweight Ian Garry.
One of Garry’s pre-fight interviews brought up the ninth anniversary of global megastar Conor McGregor’s UFC debut. Garry only had praise for Conor, and he was visibly happy to be compared to one of his heroes.
“If it wasn’t for him, I don’t know how fast it would have taken me to find this sport, because he made that very easy for me to know what I wanted to do.”
“Even the fact that people say I’m the next him or like they compare me to him, that’s cool.”

Garry was quick to mention McGregor in his post-fight Octagon interview last November after he beat Jordan Williams via 1st round KO. “A wise Irish man once said before me… We’re not here to take part, we’re here to take over, and this is the takeover part two”. He said to Joe Rogan.
Ian also recalled a Twitter DM he received from Conor following his last fight at UFC 268. He said Conor sent him a ‘thoughtful’ message and believed he had ‘sat there and meant it.’
This Saturday, Garry (8-0) fights on the prelims of UFC 273, headlined by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and challenger Chan Sung Jung. He faces Darian Weeks (5-1) in a fight dubbed as one to watch on the cards in earlier fights.
Cage Warriors was Ian’s home for the whole of his pro career before his inevitable move to the UFC. He was able to pick up five finish wins at CW out of 7 fights, not to mention his title win at Cage Warriors 125, in which he beat Jack Grant via unanimous decision.
