Rising Irish star Ian Garry had a recent trip to the hospital after eating a head kick from the UFC welterweight champion Leon Edwards.
Edwards has spent the majority of his career training under Team Renegade in his home city, Birmingham, and since attaining UFC gold, the gym has seen some notable names turn up to the gym to bank some rounds in with the champion. Ian Garry was the latest.
The Irishman exploded onto the scene in 2021 after attaining the Cage Warriors welterweight championship in a slugfest with Jack Grant. Since joining the promotion, Garry has gone 3-0, holding wins over Jordan Williams, Darian Weeks and Gabe Green. The youngster’s home is in Florida at Kill Cliff FC, where he’s been under the watchful eye of Henri Hooft but recently has been getting work in at Team Renegade.
Training alongside a newly crowned UFC champion will only benefit Garry moving forward. However, that does come at a price. That price was eating a head kick from the champ, which is the same way he dethroned Kamara Usman to capture gold.
Ian Garry’s wife took great delight in letting his followers know what happened in the training room on his Instagram, which was shared on Twitter by The MMA Media.
Ian Garry Eats a Leon Edwards Head Kick
“What happened?” asks Layla. “She (the dentist) said it could be caused by trauma?”
“Yeah, she asked me what I did for a living,” Garry replies. “She said do you do any contact sports? No.”
Layla continues: “Not only did you lie to the dentist, but you’re also avoiding telling the truth now.”
“There’s no avoiding telling the truth,” says Garry. “It just doesn’t need to be told sometimes. I may – anyone watch the Leon Edwards Usman fight? Anyone know how that went? One of the best head kicks in the UFC. Yeah, I might have felt what that kick felt like, on Wednesday morning. So yeah, Leon, I’m blaming you for my tooth f**king pain.”
Ian Garry has nothing pencilled in for his next outing as it stands. Who would you like to see him face upon his return?
