Ian Garry has stirred up controversy by asserting that he could swiftly finish Colby Covington in just one round, fueled by some disparaging remarks made by Covington about Garry and his wife.
Garry, an Irishman, has faced a tumultuous few months, witnessing a notable decline in his public image. Throughout his tenure in the UFC, he has garnered critics who believed he emulated his compatriot, Conor McGregor, too closely. However, the tide has shifted, and Garry now finds himself becoming a meme within the MMA community.
While personal matters involving Garry and his family should ideally remain private, hindsight suggests that he and his team, with his wife in the role of manager, might have made several missteps. Despite Garry’s earnest attempts to curate content for his social media presence, the outcome seems to have backfired, with fans not resonating with his personality. This, coupled with various media appearances, has propelled him into the spotlight as one of the currently most disliked fighters, drawing the attention and ire of fellow UFC athletes.
Ian Garry Sends Threat to Colby Covington
During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Garry took the opportunity to call out and criticize Covington, who has been among the fighters mocking Garry in recent times.
“I am going to box the ears off Colby Covington for some of the things he has said, and there isn’t going to be anyone in the world or in that Octagon who is going to be able to save him,” expressed Garry. “I promise you’ll know I’ll finish him, and I’ll do it in three rounds. I don’t need five rounds to finish him; I’ll do it in two. I’ll do it in one. Colby Covington is going to be slept, and I hope I hit him so hard that he is never able to talk again.”
Garry is currently slated to face Geoff Neal at UFC 298 in February. Should he emerge victorious, a significant opportunity awaits him with a potential big fight on the horizon. The outcome of this bout could be a turning point in Garry’s journey within the UFC, reshaping perceptions and determining the trajectory of his career in the highly competitive world of mixed martial arts.
