Ian Garry says that a win over Colby isn’t sufficient for his title shot and wants to prove himself against the best
Irish UFC rising star “The Future” Ian Garry (14-0-0) is one of many undefeated Welterweights consistently proving their championship potential in recent years. Following his technical shut-out victory over Geoff Neal at UFC 298 Garry grabbed the microphone and called out Colby “Chaos” Covington.
Ever since the two Welterweights Garry and Covington have been exchanging hate online for one another.
Garry & Covington Controversy
Neither man has any respect for the other leaving nothing to the imagination in their insults. “The Future” followed up his call out with a video posted to social media of him discrediting Colby’s reputation as a top Welterweight. To which Covington has retaliated with some dishonorable words about the Irishman’s wife.
Many MMA personalities have vouched for Covington outside of the octagon praising his manners and respect. But his careless use of words when discussing his fellow UFC roster has earned him a bad reputation.
This approach has lit a fire in Garry who says he hopes to “retire [Colby]”.
“I don’t think the guy deserves any respect in the world, to be honest with you, man, the s*** he talks,” Garry continued. “But I’ll step into the Octagon and I’ll retire him. That’s my goal. My whole goal to when I fight Colby Covington is so that he never puts on MMA gloves ever again.
Look, if Colby wants to fight his back garden tomorrow, I will fly to Miami and fight about his back garden. I don’t care when it is. I just want him as the opponent. I want him to be a man and step into the octagon and face his fears. Face the man who he’s talked a lot of s*** about and watch what happens when you get in there.“
Ian Garry Wants “The Baddest Men on the Planet” After Colby
Undefeated striking fanatic Ian Garry has said that if he beats Colby Covington he doesn’t want a title shot straight after. Instead he wants to earn it against “one or two [ranked figthers] in the world” to prove his worth. He believes 36 year old Colby has passed his prime and “doesn’t stand a chance”.
“No matter how good Colby Covington ever could be or would be, he would never be able to beat me“.
Ian Garry wants to beat the best of the best before competing for Welterweight gold.
“It could get me a title shot because everyone’s gonna talk about me and Colby. When I knock Colby out, when I retire him, everyone’s gonna talk about me. So, beating someone of his profile, beating someone with the respect that the fans give him, puts me in that position that if I wanted, I could call for a title shot and I could get it. But, I don’t want a title shot after this”.
“The Future” Ian Garry has named Former champion Kamaru Usman and Shavkat Rakhmonov as potential fighters he’d like to face before he goes for gold.
“I want to beat another [top contender]. I wanna beat one of the baddest men on the planet. I wanna fight an Usman, a Shavkat. Give me one of the guys that are one or two in the world. Let me dominate them and then give me my title.”
A victory over Covington would certainly justify title contention. So it goes without saying beating former champion Usman or undefeated Rakhmonov would make his title hopes undeniable.
