UFC featherweight contender Ilia Topuria recently shed light on an unconventional aspect of his pre-fight routine: drinking wine the night before weigh-ins. Known as a formidable force in the UFC’s featherweight division, Topuria is gearing up for a significant showdown against reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298.
As the highly anticipated bout approaches, Topuria aims to showcase his peak performance inside the Octagon. To achieve this, he relies on a somewhat unorthodox strategy involving wine consumption. According to Topuria, indulging in half a liter of wine on the eve of weigh-ins serves a dual purpose.
UFC 298: Ilia Topuria on Drinking Wine Before UFC Weigh-in
“Thursday nights before weigh-ins are notoriously tough for fighters,” Ilia Topuria explained: “It’s challenging to sleep and relax due to the impending weigh-in stress. However, drinking half a liter of wine helps me unwind. It elevates my mood and allows me to enjoy the moment with my team.”
He continued, “It’s a shift in atmosphere. Instead of dwelling on the upcoming fight, we celebrate and bond. This relaxation enables me to sleep soundly, and I typically wake up the next morning two pounds lighter due to dehydration. It’s all part of my preparation routine.”
While Topuria’s approach may raise eyebrows, it adds an intriguing layer to an already anticipated matchup. Despite differing opinions on the effectiveness of his method, there’s no denying the curiosity surrounding Topuria’s unique preparation tactics.
As fight night draws nearer, speculation mounts regarding the outcome of Topuria’s clash with Volkanovski. Will his unorthodox approach pay off in the Octagon? Only time will tell.
