The new UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has recently announced he has a date for his homecoming card.
UFC Spain has been rumoured for years and now Spain have Ilia Topuria at the top of the mountain, the dream looks to become reality.
Topuria has been a massive star out in Spain, solidified by his homecoming to the Santiago Bernabeu where fans were ecstatic in welcoming the champion home.
Although no date has been released officially yet Topuria posted on his X this afternoon about details of the event.
All Topuria’s tweet said was “I have a date set for UFC Spain” with the original tweet being “Ya tengo fecha para UFC España”
Rumours are now circling on who the opponent could be, most likely being the new BMF Max Holloway after previous champion Alex Volkanovski said he’s taking time out of the sport.
Ilia Topuria Reveals UFC Spain Event
Despite this Topuria has been adamant he’s not ducking the ex featherweight champion.
I never turned down the rematch with Alex as the UFC has never offered me this fight. As I’ve said many times before, I will be the first to knockout Holloway. Let’s keep this simple: Do you want to fight? If the answer is yes, there’s nothing more to discuss. Bring my belt and your pillow.
This tweet reinforces the rumour Topuria is taking on Max Hollaway rather than Volkanovski.
It will be the UFC’s first trip to Spain for an event in history and is touted to be held in Madrid as its Topuria’s home team.
The UFC has been big on creating European events recently announcing UFC Paris and UFC Manchester but the latter being on USA timeframe.
It is unknown whether UFC Spain will follow the same times as UFC Manchester but as it will be a first for Spain, it’s doubtful they will cater towards US audiences.
