Newly-crowned UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria has taken aim at lightweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Ilia Topuria Warns Islam Makhachev
The new champion of the UFC’s featherweight division has certainly not been shy of names when it comes to his callouts. After dethroning the long reigning former champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC298, it appears the champ has a number of names on his hitlist. The latest of which, is Islam Makhachev.
Makhachev joins Topuria’s hitlist alongside Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway, Yair Rodriguez and Conor McGregor. Topuria accepted that Volkanovski’s dominance in the featherweight division may warrant an immediate rematch. Whilst welcoming fights with the self-proclaimed “best boxer in the UFC” Max Holloway, contender Yair Rodriguez (before his loss to Brian Ortega on Saturday night) and of course the ‘red panty night’ against Conor McGregor.
Today though, it was Islam’s turn. In a video posted across Ilia Topuria’s social media accounts, the champion uploaded a video of Makhachev being knocked out by Adriano Martins. That loss, is the only one on Makhachev’s record and came at UFC 192 back in 2015, almost ten years ago. On that occasion, Makhachev was caught cold in the first round and was unable to recover.
“The Boy Is Cutting You Off”
Ilia Topuria’s post seems to be a way to poke fun at the lightweight champion. Topuria is known for his heavy hands. Not only at featherweight but at lightweight too. Now, it appears that he is now sending a warning to Makhachev. The warning is clear. Ilia Topuria is sending a message. The message being that when the two meet, it will be lights out for Islam Makhachev.
