Interview With Callum Kerr
Couple of days out from your K1 contest at Budo Fighting Championships 48. How are the general nerves and feelings as we approach fight night? Has it been a smooth camp for you?
Not nervous, just really excited to be fighting. This will be my third fight in 6 months, so I’m well prepared. Training has been great. I’ve had the odd niggle here and there, but that’s expected when I’m training so much.
In terms of preparation, what has been the main focus in camp to prepare for Scott Baxter? Has the approach remained the same as usual, or have you done anything differently?
Stays the same – Monday and Wednesday are Thai boxing classes, Tuesday and Thursday I follow an s+c programme, and Friday is for sparring. I will do some pad work over the weekend and do my cardio in the mornings before work.
Lessons Learnt
What lessons have you taken from your last fight that you hope to implement into your favour in Saturday’s fight?
Nothing specific, it’s a really good experience, and It’s a great feeling getting my hand raised. I’m just going to continue working hard to get the win and see what’s next.
I like to ask those I haven’t spoken to before their journey into combat sports, and why it’s a route they decided to take. What made you take the leap into the sport?
I’ve always followed combat sports. Last few years, I’ve been committed to training consistently, and it’s become a way of life for most of us. Be lost without the gym.
Improvements
What improvements have you made within yourself since your last time out?
I feel I’ve levelled up a lot since my first fight in November. Just feel faster and stronger. I’ve stopped lifting heavy weights, and I’m doing a more sport-specific programme.
Seeing in the past you were doing PTs with Stevie Ray, is that something that you still do? Tell us how beneficial is it to learn from someone who’s been there, at the top of the game and knows what it takes to fight at a high level. That must give you an incredible amount of motivation?
Yeah was great to do a PT with Stevie. He’s a great fighter, and I learned a lot from him. I was mostly working on mixing everything together and trying out MMA. I do a lot of PTs with our head coach at the D Unit. He has had many, many fights and fought at a high level. Forever learning from him and the rest of the team.
Callum Kerr Talks Opponent
As mentioned, you’ll meet Scott Baxter on Saturday night. What do you know about your opponent, if anything? What are you expecting Baxter to bring to the table?
I try not to watch my opponent’s fights. I’ll ask my coaches to watch it and come up with a game plan for me. Expect him to start fast, and I’ll be prepared for that.
Lastly, when you put your head on the pillow at night and visualise this fight. How does it play out in your head? How does Callum Kerr get it done?
I’m shattered when I put my head on the pillow. I am just going straight to sleep. I suppose we will find out Saturday, won’t we?
