The IOC have taken positives steps forwards to bringing boxing back to the Olympic Games for 2028 Los Angeles.
Boxing has been an Olympic sport and a key part of the curriculum since its introduction in 1904.
So when the idea of taking away the Boxing from the olympics starting in 2028 was suggested it was met with uproar.
Boxers have long made it a priority to make Olympic history and represent their respective countries in the games.
That dream of many amateur boxers could still be a very real reality as a vote this week is set to take place to reintroduce boxing to the Olympics for 2028.
IOC President Thomas Bach is confident ahead of the vote.
“After the provisional recognition of World Boxing in February we were in a position to take this decision,”
“This recommendation has to go to the session, but I am very confident they will approve it so that all the boxers of the world then have certainty they can participate in the Olympic Games in LA.”
IOC Have World Boxing Backing-
President of World Boxing Boris van der Vorst believes it will be a important decision for the future of the sport.
“This is a very significant and important decision for Olympic boxing and takes the sport one step closer to being restored to the Olympic programme.
“I have no doubt it will be very positively received by everyone connected with boxing, at every level throughout the world, who understands the critical importance to the future of the sport of boxing continuing to remain a part of the Olympic Movement.
He went on to thank the various committees hoping for a positive outcome.
“On behalf of everyone at World Boxing I would like to thank the EB of the IOC for the trust they have placed in our organisation and we hope for a positive outcome when the IOC Session meets this week.”
Vorst confirms his values align with the IOC and believes with there trust he will uphold the values of the games.
“World Boxing understands that being part of the Olympic Games is a privilege and not a right and I assure the IOC that if boxing is restored to the programme for LA28, that World Boxing is completely committed to being a trustworthy and reliable partner that will adhere to and uphold the values of the Olympic Charter.”
The chair of World Boxing, ex world champion, Gennady Golovkin has been vital in helping the sport potentially return to the Olympic programme.
