Islam Focuses on Welterweight Showdown at International Fight Week
With UFC 311 behind us, Islam Makhachev looks toward a welterweight collision at this year’s International Fight Week. After making short work of number 10 ranked Renato Moicano and claiming the pound-for-pound title from Dana White what’s next? Well, Islam is saying the next best thing is giving the people what they want the super fight champion vs champion. What better place to do so than International Fight Week in Las Vegas Nevada one of the fight capitals of the world? After his previous performance, the probability of this fight happening is high.
Super Fight at International Fight Week
International Fight Week is UFC’s version of Wrestlemania, “The granddaddy of them all.” as they say. There is no better venue for a champion vs champion fight or for Islam to finally become the second member of his gym (AKA) to become a double champion. With the current welterweight champion Belal Muhammad riding his six-fight win streak or the number one contender Shavkat Rakmonov (19-0), the fight will surely deliver! The only thing left is for the phones to ring and a champion-sized challenge to be answered.
I Can Be Three Division Also
“I can be three-division also. Just give me the chance, that’s it. I will fight with {Dricus}Du Plessis.” Islam said as he spoke about his potential to be a triple champion. Makhachev says he would fight Du Plessis if the UFC gave him the opportunity he feels he can handle middleweight but light-heavy might be too much to handle.”(205) It’s too much. I need the DC (Daniel Cormier) diet program to be 200 pounds” Islam jokes. What’s not a joke is the UFC has never had a triple champion, even better if Makhachev achieved the feat he would be the second person. The only other person in MMA history who has achieved triple champion status is Anatoly Malykhin!
Breaking Records
Islam Makhavhev’s UFC 311 performance solidified him as one of the best lightweights ever. Leaving him holding the record for most title defenses in UFC lightweight history. A record that was previously shared by Khabib Nurmagomedov, Benson Henderson, and BJ Penn all legends in the division. So with his record-breaking title defense and pound-for-pound status achieved all that’s left is to collect that second championship.
